Author Asley Spires, who created the Binky the Space Cat graphic novels, visited our school last week. she spoke to the Grade 2 & Grade 3 classes in the library. A Grade 2 teacher suggested we do a follow up project involving the use of Comic Life to enable er students to create their own graphic novels. In order to enthuse the students and encourage their drawing the first step was to draw their version of Binky. We used 2Paint a Picture, and saved the cartoon as a png file. In order not to be transparent the Binky cartoon had to be filled in an off white colour. Here is the first step (next week we'll move onto Comic Life).

Comic Master is a free graphic novel creator. It is quite simple to use, and we tried it with Grade 2 classes who were able to produce some brief comics. The graphics are limited to four characters (two female and two male) and changing the size can be a bit fiddly. The program uses a magnification tool to make resizing easier, but one of two students had a bit of trouble getting back to the original comic pane. See below for a Grade 3 example: I read about Incredibox from several different sources. It is a French website that uses sets of loops to create a composition. The interface is very accessible, and this week the Primary classes all enjoyed it immensely. Check out the Gr2 videos to see how much!
The Grade 5 and Grade 6 classes are busy finishing their Science projects for the upcoming Science Fair. Part of their requirements is graphing results, especially when comparing two variables. In Grade 6 the students are encouraged to enter their data into Excel and import an appropriate graph. In Grade 5 the students may use any tool to prepare graphs. I revisited Create a Graph and was pleased to see it has been updated, including the ability to compare 2 data sets. There is also a helpful tutorial section outlining the best uses of the different graphs.
