A Grade 2 class produced some beautiful work as part of an e-collage activity. We were using the e-collage option in 2Paint a Picture with real leaf scans. Here are the amazing examples:

Using the book 'The Lonely Inukshuk' as inspiration the Grade 1 classes painted their own inukshuks, either using a traditional style or a more northern art style featuring a sunrise or sunset. They used 2Paint a Picture. Today the Grade 2 classes used 2Paint a Picture to create some stunning leaf e-collages. See what you think! The interesting thing with Comic Life is that there is no content provided - it has to be self generated. As the Grade 1 classes research the author/illustrator Melanie Watt it was suggested that we base a project around this unit of study. We used 2Paint a picture to draw Scaredy Squirrel and Chester the Cat (as well as other featured characters!) and then imported them into Comic Life. Some students even addressed the author or provided off-screen speech bubbles! Author Asley Spires, who created the Binky the Space Cat graphic novels, visited our school last week. she spoke to the Grade 2 & Grade 3 classes in the library. A Grade 2 teacher suggested we do a follow up project involving the use of Comic Life to enable er students to create their own graphic novels. In order to enthuse the students and encourage their drawing the first step was to draw their version of Binky. We used 2Paint a Picture, and saved the cartoon as a png file. In order not to be transparent the Binky cartoon had to be filled in an off white colour. Here is the first step (next week we'll move onto Comic Life). In the run up to Easter we looked at egg decorating and pattern design. The Kindergarten classes used Purplemash to create a patterned Easter egg. There was a handy mask option which ensured that the paint stayed inside the lines. The Grade 1 classes used 2Paint a Picture to create their Easter egg designs - no mask feature for them, hence a progression in skills from Kindergarten! (Top row is Kindergarten, bottom row is Grade 1.)
Inspired by art projects from the UK I took photos of each student's head, took out the background and saved them as .png files (this maintains transparency, ie. no background!) The students then used 2Paint a Picture to 'open' their head and choose various objects to 'come out'. A couple were creative; one used a complete picture of herself that we'd used for a project last year, and another student used her wordle! This is quite a repetitive exercise, but was good reinforcement for filehandling skills. Check out the examples:
Pauline (Kindergarten teacher) suggested that I prepare an activity associated with Project Hands, our Penny Drive campaign helping Guatemala. I set up the desktops so each student was 'ready to go'. Using 2Paint a Picture the students made an e-collage using handprints based on a photo taken of a Kindergarten student's hand. As expected, there was a broad range of final product. See below for examples.
We wait until January before our Kindergarten classes start to use the computer room. This enables them to settle into school. Up until now the use of technology is voluntary; now they are all exposed to using the computer and mouse. As I want them to practise using the mouse the first activity is creating some art in 2Paint a Picture, This lends itself well to experimentation and rewards all the students with some screen output. All three classes did very well!
I loved how Ann (Gr1 teacher) displayed the snail art that her students made using 2 Paint a Picture and the 'spinner' option. |
