Thanks to Martin Tiller! Last week I mentioned to him about using Desk Top Publishing in school. Somehow this seems to have fallen out of vogue in recent years, especially in the light of publishing to the internet (blogs, websites etc.). I'm especially interested in class magazines or newsletters. He suggested trying MS Publisher 2007, part of the MS Office 2007 suite. To that end I attempted to test drive in 5/6W. I gave them a Halloween template and suggested they write two main articles on the page, one article about Halloween in school (class party, or pumpkin carving), and one article about Halloween at home. We had pictures taken by the students in school to use, and I allowed the students to search for copyright free images on google and Flickr. I was quite pleased with both the student response and their engagement.

Today I gave 5/6W the task of updating their website. I added an extra page (ucoming dates) and everyone was assigned a page to edit. Elle made a great suggestion for the blog entry; take pictures of the pumpkins and write about the pumpkin carving yesterday. Well done, Elle!
The students were very attentive listening to instructions, and they produced some good pictures trying out different angles and techniques (ie. using shadows). These are the pictures that they chose to publish: Today we experimented with Voki. I love Brodie's example - this has quite a sense of humour! Thea designed her picture for the 5/6W class website using Kerpoof and the 'Make a PIcture' feature. What was so creative was her idea to represent all the students in the class using the given images. Kudos to Thea for checking that each of her peers was happy with her choice of image for them, and changing it if neccesary.
