Although it took a lot of work we were very pleased with our latest episode. A bit longer than the last one, but this time we featured 7 student stories and more students, including first timers. Things to focus on the future will be transitions, student interviews and a welcome overview outlining stories coming up.

We weren't able to air our latest CW5 News Broadcast last term due to Assembly constraints, so it was shown at the first Assembly after Christmas. It garnered favourable response, and we's endeavoured to improve the production standards and overall content. We wanted the news stories to be shorter, punchier and more immediate, and this worked well in the latest episode. In our debrief with students I mentioned two important points about content. The first was the pun about "Bringing you the latest... DIRT!" They weren't too familiar with the phrase "Dish the dirt", but several could see the connection with presenting the news details and salient points. The second point I made was about interviewing. If you ask the right questions you can receive the best content, as in interviewing Avery's Veteran Grandfather. When asked about serving your country he replied in the form of the question, "What have you done today to make the world a better place?" It's very powerful journalism! Today we showed the latest CW5 broadcast to the whole school. It was well received, even though it was more than 15 minutes long. This time we included more French, and mixed French and English in the same story - very Canadian! We used an autocue for most of the stories, but found it scrolled too fast for student comfort. We made more use of Dr Moody (puppet) to maintain interest for younger students. Today we broadcast in Assembly (and online) our latest episode for CW5, Season 2 Episode 1 covering last terms major events. As the technical lead it's been an interesting journey of learning new skills (I was only back up before!) so the main challenges were green screen video as well as general video production. I ended up using iMovie 10, and Serif MoviePlus x6 for titles. For the next episode we want smoother transitions between stories, as well as an autocue system for the newsreaders.
