A new month so a new co-curricular club! Today we had 17 Gr1 & Gr2 students come to the first Makerspace of 2018. After watching a couple of videos about Paper Circuits they they had a choice of using Lego or Polydron or the puzzle game 3 Slices. We had over an hour for each student to work with me assembling their paper circuit. I had already put on the copper tape, so they had to complete the circuit by choosing an LED and battery. Next week they can make their own circuit using the copper tape themselves. It was a nice relaxing atmosphere, and the students were well pleased with their light up cards.

The Grade 1 classes are studying plants, and are planting seedlings into the school garden. We used the 2Animate lite app in Purplemash to create plant animations. here are a few examples:
The Gr1 classes wanted to start their coding lessons so I decided to start them off with 2Go on the 2Simple Purple Mash website. Some of the students encountered difficulties with the coding challenges, but all were able to gain a sense of direction and distance. I used Simon Haughton's 2Go guide which proved most useful, especially with using a blank screen rather than the themed picture backgrounds.
At short notice I was asked to help the Gr1 students to create PenPal letters. I decided to try 2Publish Extra in PurpleMash and use a basic template to enable the students to add both a photo and text. I quickly downloaded student photos from their class website, then the students were able to create their letters once I'd given them instructions. Their penpals are in Australia, not sure which city yet. Here are some examples, not yet finished:
Today we showed the Grade 1 Scavenger Hunt Photostory in Assembly. The video was completed a couple of weeks ago when the field trip was still fresh in the students' minds. Some of the students were very quiet when using the microphone, even after lots of attempts! Using the book 'The Lonely Inukshuk' as inspiration the Grade 1 classes painted their own inukshuks, either using a traditional style or a more northern art style featuring a sunrise or sunset. They used 2Paint a Picture. The interesting thing with Comic Life is that there is no content provided - it has to be self generated. As the Grade 1 classes research the author/illustrator Melanie Watt it was suggested that we base a project around this unit of study. We used 2Paint a picture to draw Scaredy Squirrel and Chester the Cat (as well as other featured characters!) and then imported them into Comic Life. Some students even addressed the author or provided off-screen speech bubbles! To continue the animation theme we used 2Animate Lite in Purplemash to create some basic animations. There are some limitations in the Lite 2Animate - only 10 frames, and no import facility. Still, it's a nice introduction to animation, and some of the students used the 'onion skinning' tool well. Here are some Gr1 and Gr2 examples (click on the image to see the animation!)
I loved how Ann (Gr1 teacher) displayed the snail art that her students made using 2 Paint a Picture and the 'spinner' option. Grade1HA used 2Paint a Picture to choose a piece of Dorling Kindersly free clip-art to use as an illustration for non-fiction. The DK photos are very clear, with white background. The Grade One students then drew their own representation of the object to illustrate the fictional element of the task. Here are some examples: |
