A new month so a new co-curricular club! Today we had 17 Gr1 & Gr2 students come to the first Makerspace of 2018. After watching a couple of videos about Paper Circuits they they had a choice of using Lego or Polydron or the puzzle game 3 Slices. We had over an hour for each student to work with me assembling their paper circuit. I had already put on the copper tape, so they had to complete the circuit by choosing an LED and battery. Next week they can make their own circuit using the copper tape themselves. It was a nice relaxing atmosphere, and the students were well pleased with their light up cards.

Our Librarian Lori read The Sharing Circle by Theresa “Corky” Larsen-Jonasson, so Meg a Gr1 teacher planned an ADST unit for students to design and create their own talking sticks. Despite the pouring rain they collected a stick from outside in the garden, then decorated them with pipe cleaners, yarn, beads and feathers. Some also chose to use paint. Here is some of the process (some of these photos are student taken with an iPad): As part of our Earth Week activities we used pictures from around te school to create some posters in Grade 2. I had forgotten that clip art as well as drawing tools can be all used together with pictures to create interesting effects. Here are some of the student creations: A Grade 2 class produced some beautiful work as part of an e-collage activity. We were using the e-collage option in 2Paint a Picture with real leaf scans. Here are the amazing examples:
Today the Grade 2 classes used 2Paint a Picture to create some stunning leaf e-collages. See what you think! We used Photo Story 3 to record the Grade 2 students to create a presentation about their recent Field trip to Yew Lake, Cypress Mountain to share with the rest of the school. The students were all able to take a few photos at some point during the day. Here is the end result!
For Grade 2 we used pictures taken around the school as backgrounds. Then the students were able to select a background for the panel and add in their comic characters (Binky and friends). Finally they were able to add the narration and speech bubbles. Once they'd got the hang of click and drag, as well as undo, they were fairly independent and able to create some fun scenes.
Author Asley Spires, who created the Binky the Space Cat graphic novels, visited our school last week. she spoke to the Grade 2 & Grade 3 classes in the library. A Grade 2 teacher suggested we do a follow up project involving the use of Comic Life to enable er students to create their own graphic novels. In order to enthuse the students and encourage their drawing the first step was to draw their version of Binky. We used 2Paint a Picture, and saved the cartoon as a png file. In order not to be transparent the Binky cartoon had to be filled in an off white colour. Here is the first step (next week we'll move onto Comic Life). Comic Master is a free graphic novel creator. It is quite simple to use, and we tried it with Grade 2 classes who were able to produce some brief comics. The graphics are limited to four characters (two female and two male) and changing the size can be a bit fiddly. The program uses a magnification tool to make resizing easier, but one of two students had a bit of trouble getting back to the original comic pane. See below for a Grade 3 example: The Grade 2 classes used 2Animate Lite in Purplemash to create these small animations. Here are a few examples (click on the image to see the animation!):
