It's been a few months since I researched 3D printer apps, so I took another look at what was around. I came across 3DSlash (essentially like a sculpting tool) and wanted to trial it with our Gr3 students. As they're studying First Nations pre-European contact, in conjunction with the class teachers we decided to create Inukshuks. Once I had worked out how to save the student work (using a free account we're only able to log in two students at a time) we got to work. The first session was free play to explore how the app worked, then the second session focussed on the Inukshuk design. Not every student was able to finish, so we'll need one more session in order for everyone to have a finished product. The results speak for them selves!

Grade 3 students are studying Coast Salish First Nations (pre European contact) and there are not many online resources. Together with the Gr3 teachers we came up with the idea of creating original Coast Salish art using the First Nation design elements. We used the following sites for reference: http://uvac.uvic.ca/gallery/salishcurriculum/ http://classrooms.tacoma.k12.wa.us/ses/mr-potts-3rd-grade/coast-salish-art-resources Here is some of the student work they produced: As part of the Grade 3 focus on Space we decided to use 2Publish Extra on Purplemash for the students to create newspaper reports about the first men on the moon. Enabling the students to change font size and colour, as well as adding the clip art, augmented the presentation. The students were able to retell their facts in their own style: Following a discussion with one of our Gr3 teachers about the dryness of the Social Studies pioneer project (dry in the sense that were no dynamic Canadian websites online) we decided to try and liven up the project by using Aurasma to bring murals to life. I used photos that were taken during the field trip to Burnaby Village living museum as a backdrop, then filmed the students using a greenscreen. I uploaded the material to Aurasma Studio online. Here are a couple of videos showing the end result:
Comic Master is a free graphic novel creator. It is quite simple to use, and we tried it with Grade 2 classes who were able to produce some brief comics. The graphics are limited to four characters (two female and two male) and changing the size can be a bit fiddly. The program uses a magnification tool to make resizing easier, but one of two students had a bit of trouble getting back to the original comic pane. See below for a Grade 3 example: A New Year and a New Term! Two of the Gr3 classes have been using Storyjumper, which is an excellent story creation site. Classes can be set up by the teacher, and students are then assigned their own individual log-in. What is really nice is the school-home link, as work started in school can be continued at home. The stories are created using supplied clip art (props) and backgrounds (scenes). An additional option is to import photos as either scenes or props. Take a photo of the classroom and use it as the background for some creative work!
Fiona, a Grade 3 Teacher, found this great resource called Over the Top at the Canadian War Museum. It's an interactive adventure (like a choose your own adventure book) that helps students understand WW1 conditions in the trenches in 1916. The text is narrated at the beginning, but is not later on, so students need reading ability.
I know it was a short term, but the time seems to have flown by! The last couple of weeks the Gr5/6 students have finished off their animations in 2CASS, then they've enjoyed some downtime, mainly by playing Minecraft. The Gr4 studenrs have thoroughly enjoyed making Animoto videos - for progression they'd need to focus on content and design, as I feel they've really only been playing with the process. Maybe this then come back to the original purpose of the video itself. The Gr3 students have enjoyed the art projects, finishing with 'Around the World', placing their image on a world background. (See examples below!) And the Gr2 students (so many of them!!) thoroughly enjoyed both The Isle of Tune and Motion Planning, as well as LOGO programming. Today some masterpieces were created using eCollage in 2Paint to make leaf pictures. See for yourself!
