I was delighted when I was asked to lead a lesson about designing posters to advertise the Grade 4 fundraising effort to support the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. We used 2Publish Extra in Purplemash. Prior to the lesson I collated some public domain images from the typhoon disaster, then the students chose which template to use and inserted images, and text to create their poster. They were very involved and creative. Here are the final products which were used to raise funds at the Christmas concerts.

After much blood, sweat and tears (yes, folks - 'my' blood, sweat and tears!!) our Gr4 Author/Tech project is complete. It has been uploaded to Apple for publishing, and the printed books are being shipped as I type. There was quite a large learning curve for me, and lessons I've learnt I hope to apply in the future. One hurdle I had to overcome was using PhotoShop to take out the backgrounds of the images that students would use for their digital collage. It took a while for me to realise that jpeg images would not maintain background transparency, so all images had to be converted to png format. Another issue I had to address was page orientation. The original Hanoch Piven books we used for inspiration were in portrait orientation, whereas Apple only provide landscape orientation. Here is the final product! 3/4DG interviewed teachers and took their picture to put in the class magazine. They changed tasks of interviewer, recorder and camera person. Who knew that Mr. D. had once been given a jolly big green bath mat shaped like a foot, or that Mrs. Middleton had actually seen Santa's boots and red pants!
Both 3/4DG and 5/6W are working on Christmas magazines. The students are working on groups, and have a very real deadline of the end of term. They are using MS Publisher 2007, and taking photos and gathering copyright free images.
