The Gr1 classes wanted to start their coding lessons so I decided to start them off with 2Go on the 2Simple Purple Mash website. Some of the students encountered difficulties with the coding challenges, but all were able to gain a sense of direction and distance. I used Simon Haughton's 2Go guide which proved most useful, especially with using a blank screen rather than the themed picture backgrounds.
At short notice I was asked to help the Gr1 students to create PenPal letters. I decided to try 2Publish Extra in PurpleMash and use a basic template to enable the students to add both a photo and text. I quickly downloaded student photos from their class website, then the students were able to create their letters once I'd given them instructions. Their penpals are in Australia, not sure which city yet. Here are some examples, not yet finished:
As part of the Grade 3 focus on Space we decided to use 2Publish Extra on Purplemash for the students to create newspaper reports about the first men on the moon. Enabling the students to change font size and colour, as well as adding the clip art, augmented the presentation. The students were able to retell their facts in their own style: As part of our Earth Week activities we used pictures from around te school to create some posters in Grade 2. I had forgotten that clip art as well as drawing tools can be all used together with pictures to create interesting effects. Here are some of the student creations: I was delighted when I was asked to lead a lesson about designing posters to advertise the Grade 4 fundraising effort to support the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan. We used 2Publish Extra in Purplemash. Prior to the lesson I collated some public domain images from the typhoon disaster, then the students chose which template to use and inserted images, and text to create their poster. They were very involved and creative. Here are the final products which were used to raise funds at the Christmas concerts.
45DG have been using the 2DIY component in Purplemash to create their own games and puzzles using both PC workstations as well as iPads. The challenge was to design a game or puzzle for their Junior kindergarten buddies. They were so keen to do this that they showed their buddies before checking with me! Here are some photos and video of the event: I wanted to introduce this to the Grade 3 Tech Club yesterday, but I hadn't figured out how to import your own images into the Purple Mash 2DIY game designer. Today the penny dropped and I quickly made my own collecting type game based on the Backpack Buddies food collection drive that is happening at school right now. I can't wait to show the Grade 3 students next week how to import their own images! Click on the image below to play the game: be patient, it takes a while to load.
The Kindergarten classes have used Purplemash and the Autumn painting activity to create their own Fall trees. This is useful to practice their mouse and manipulative skills, also spatial awareness between screen and mouse. The Grade 2 classes used 2Animate Lite in Purplemash to create these small animations. Here are a few examples (click on the image to see the animation!):
