As we only had half the group here today (Gr6 were away at Outdoor School) we tried using a couple of EV3 kits to control directly for some Sumo challenges. Unfortunately we had bluetooth connection issues, so could only get one robot controlled at a time. Eventually realized how to connect both kits, but then we were out of time!

Here's a great example of Applied Design, skills & Technologies. Grade 6 students were studying electrical circuits by using Snap Circuits. As an extension their teacher got them to design bugs with glowing LED lights using clothes pins. (This project was adapted from Pinterest!) Here are some examples: I was delighted with the 6Key class today who produced some lovely Animoto videos today in just one lesson. I explained that we needed some camp videos to show to the rest of the school in Assembly next week. They paid close attention and whilst not perfect (this was their first attempt!) they created some lovely works which very much reflected their personalities. These videos are very much proof of just how user-friendly the Animoto online video creator is. The Grade 5 and Grade 6 classes are busy finishing their Science projects for the upcoming Science Fair. Part of their requirements is graphing results, especially when comparing two variables. In Grade 6 the students are encouraged to enter their data into Excel and import an appropriate graph. In Grade 5 the students may use any tool to prepare graphs. I revisited Create a Graph and was pleased to see it has been updated, including the ability to compare 2 data sets. There is also a helpful tutorial section outlining the best uses of the different graphs.
Starting my second year in the role as the Teacher Responsible for Technology Integration I'm looking to repeat many of the successful projects from last year. However I'm also planning to try new challenges, such as the Gr4 Budding Authors Book Publishing Co-curricular Club. Sara, Gr6 Science Teacher, asked me to help find a collage maker so that her students could present Extreme Environment images and facts. I ended up using photovisi.com, which didn't require emails or subscription. The end results worked well, the only disadvantage being that it was a 'one shot deal'; work could not be saved and returned later.See examples below: The French Dept. bought Comic Life, and the Grade 6 classes were given the assignment of making comics using either clipart or their own pictures. Some of the finished work was very well presented. I need to find out how to produce the accents and let the students know beforehand.
This was an interesting experience for me, given that the theme was 'Go Wild' in terms of 'getting back to nature. Watches, cameras and technology was discouraged so that the students could 'live in the moment'. I acted as the official photographer, and presented a slideshow at Assembly. At least we stayed dry for most of the time - the rain didn't start until our journey home!
